Project aim

AMCS were to optimize existing collection routes of the waste bin to achieve savings through reduction in trucks, labour and millage.

Background

South Dublin felt that they would benefit from optimising their existing routes for a number of reasons for example,

  • Collection frequency moving from weekly to fortnightly
  • Routes had grown organically as new properties came on line
  • Increased recycling rates
  • Changes to service over time such as introduction of wheelie bins etc.
  • Market open to private operators so some loss of collection points.

AMCS was able to use the existing product used by South Dublin County Council called MyScales which is an on truck weighing system. Using this data AMCS were able to accurately calculate the weight of waste produced per property which produced more balanced routes and utilised the trucks to the required capacity.

After the optimisation was carried out AMCS were able to send the route pickups and the vehicle path to the on board PC for the drivers to follow which aided in the roll out. made roll out

Results

The following were the results achieved:

  • Reduction in 16 to 10.
  • Balanced routes produced across the fleet
  • Significant reduction in labour and millage.
